Caperdonich is a closed distillery that started its life as a production expansion for Glen Grant. Most of the equipment including pot stills were nearly identical and the water source was the same. It was eventually closed in 2002. Parts of this story sound kind of like the story of Brora/Clynelish. If you’re really interested you will find more details on the Malt Madness page.

Anyway, for a closed distillery, the prices of new Caperdonich bottlings are quite reasonable and it turns out the stuff is good too.

Nose:

Floral, fruity and cereal notes. Sweet vanilla cake, tropical fruits and spices. With water tropical fruits become more prominent. Mandarines, kiwi, pineapple. Green apples show up after some time in the glass. It’s just great on the nose.

Taste:

Starts with sweet cake, malt and butter. Moment later earth, hay and green tea appear along with fresh wood spicyness and some ginger. There are just hints of the fruity notes that were more apparent on the nose.

Finish:

Medium length. Cereal and hay in sugar sirup.

Comment:

Pretty complex and interesting whisky you could spent a lot of time with. It clearly hits the notes I like. The sweet cake/tropical fruits profile makes it a perfect after-dinner or a christmas dram.

Score: 90/100
